Legal Services Law Line of Vermont, Inc. (Law Line) seeks an Executive Director to lead our non-profit civil legal services law firm as we enter our 21st year of service to Vermont’s low-income residents. We seek a highly qualified individual with a vision and demonstrated passion for serving and advocating on behalf of the disadvantaged and other vulnerable populations.  The Executive Director will lead a staff of 10 dedicated and enthusiastic advocates and lawyers located in Burlington, Vermont.  The Executive Director reports to an engaged and diverse Board of Directors.


  • A law degree from an accredited U.S. law school, or the equivalent; active, good-standing status with a bar association in the U.S.; and eligibility to become a member of the Vermont Bar within one year, if applicable;
  • At least five years of legal experience, preferably related to representing low-income clients and/or advocacy of same;
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively with others in a collegial, dynamic environment;
  • Passionate commitment to improving the lives of low-income Vermonters;
  • Supervisory experience and grant management experience, preferably with an LSC funded legal services organization.

Legal Services Law Line of Vermont seeks an Executive Director with the following qualities and characteristics:

  • Willingness to serve as the public face of Legal Services Law Line of Vermont, nurturing effective relationships with Vermont Legal Aid, Inc., our clients, other legal aid organizations and social service agencies and the courts;
  • Ability and interest in effective, ongoing strategic planning;
  • Visionary leadership with impeccable integrity;
  • Ability to relay that vision to the Board of Directors, staff and community members;
  • Ability to maintain and strengthen our existing funding relationship with LSC, and to develop and cultivate new relationships with individuals and corporate donors that lead to an increase and diversification of our funding sources;
  • Ability to ensure compliance with the requirements of all funding sources and work with our Auditor;
  • Experience with grant compliance, contracts and legal aid principles and requirements, and willingness to apply for, renew and manage all grants;
  • Strategic ability and disposition to handle the day-to-day financial and management responsibilities, as well as the ability to dream big and look at long-range growth and planning;
  • Experience and skills to engage with the legal aid client community and with an active Board of Directors. A creative person who will value working with the Board of Directors so its members actively contribute to the success of the program.  An ability to keep Board of Directors apprised of financial status and issues that need Board attention;
  • Experience developing and maintaining constructive, positive professional relationships;
  • Commitment to the use of technology to improve and extend services, and the ability to oversee the technology resources for the organization: maintaining, acquiring and implementing as needed;
  • A talented, highly-motivated individual with strong leadership skills;
  • An individual with good judgment and effective verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to provide the leadership and structural support for staff in order to strengthen and protect the extremely high quality legal services we deliver for clients;
  • Demonstrated ability and experience to effectively supervise staff, and review and provide appropriate training and oversight to ensure smooth and successful daily operation, staff development and satisfaction.
  • Ability to assume ultimate responsibility for all personnel matters, including establishing position qualifications for all staff positions, hiring, discipline, establishing personnel policies and establishing all operational procedures;
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills including the ability to make tough decisions.

What is Law Line of Vermont:

Law Line provides free representation, consultation, advice and community education on civil legal matters affecting low-income Vermonters.  Law Line of Vermont is primarily supported by a grant from the Legal Services Corporation in Washington, D.C.  Law Line provides pro se assistance and, in selected cases, full representation in housing, consumer, benefits, and other civil legal matters.  Law Line houses the Vermont Volunteer Lawyers Project to support pro bono efforts in Vermont.  In collaboration with Vermont Legal Aid, Inc., Law Line has created Vermont Law Help, a project staffed by lawyers to provide telephone intake for Law Line cases, quick advice, and case referrals to Vermont Legal Aid, Inc.  Law Line created and manages the Vermont Law Help website which provides information to help Vermonters understand their rights and solve problems; provides forms and directions to empower people to find support and services they need to represent themselves in court; and provides resources, links, contact information and directions for how to contact Law Line, Vermont Legal Aid, the courts, state agencies and other organizations.

In addition to counsel and advice, Law Line provides information, workshops, training and referrals for low-income Vermonters on a wide range of topics of interest and relevance to our community.
